Most of the doctors in PACKids are parents AND physicians. As such, we see the healthcare of Richmond’s children from more than one vantage point. When a child is admitted to the hospital with a serious illness, condition or injury, there is a conscious decision made by that child’s pediatrician as to which hospital system can provide the needed care for a sick patient. One type of illness may require the hospital where the patient’s specialist works while another condition may be better suited to a different hospital closer to the patient’s home. Currently, pediatric medical resources are spread out in many different places across the city.

Richmond provides excellent doctors and nursing staff for its pediatric patients, but unfortunately it does not provide one unified location where parents can feel confident that they will find all the specialists, all the needed care for children.

A single, unified children’s hospital would solve our dilemma. Building a brand new facility would provide the comprehensive and coordinated healthcare that children in the Richmond region rightly deserve. Healthcare providers from all disciplines could work together cohesively and provide more efficient and coordinated care. In doing so, we will transform healthcare for children into a fully integrated system that can provide for the medical, emotional, social and spiritual needs of children and their families.

What We Stand For

Our Vision

PACKids envisions this hospital for our patients:

  • A children’s hospital that consolidates pediatric care and the talents of pediatric healthcare providers into one central location and provides outstanding care for all children in our city and region.
  • A children’s hospital that has a governing board independent of the three hospital systems that currently provide pediatric healthcare and a governing board which embraces the expertise of these systems by having them equally represented as voting members.
  • A children’s hospital that is profitable with those profits reinvested into the children’s hospital in order to fund clinical care, research and teaching future pediatricians and pediatric sub-specialists.
  • A children’s hospital with an open staff model where pediatricians, subspecialists and surgeons, all are welcomed and supported as they provide care for their patients.
  • A children’s hospital that is free-standing from any adult hospital on a campus that is accessible to our community with room to grow in the future.
Our Goals
  • The hospital will consolidate our city’s pediatric care into one central location that provides outstanding care for all the children in our community.
  • The governing board will be independent. The region’s hospital systems can have seats on the board, but no one hospital system can have a voting majority.
  • The budget of the children’s hospital will be independent where profits come back to the children’s hospital to support its clinical care, research and teaching missions.
  • The hospital will have an open staff model.
  • The hospital will be freestanding, on a campus that is accessible to our community with land to grow for the future.
Our Values

We value collaboration and a selfless commitment to children, our patients.  It is through commitment and collaborative efforts within the pediatric medical community that we can ensure the best possible outcomes and care for our patients.  It’s that simple.

How Far We’ve Come
The community’s effort to build a children’s hospital in Richmond dates back to 2005. Click on our timeline of events below for a larger view.
